The creative spaces of artists and writers do feel like inherently liminal spaces. They are meant to have their consistencies and yet also always be transitional as the work changes. The studio spaces I most enjoy seeing are those that show their use. Warm and eclectic spaces filled with materials, tools, inspiration, and personality.

Me too — I love a lived in studio that’s not too precious and perfect

I love seeing other artist’s studios and workspaces! I feel like my perfect portal places exist in two parts — where I’m actually feeling the “zing” of inspiration (usually while traveling or just exploring something new) and the place where I put it all together (like my studio or a quiet kitchen table in an Airbnb early in the morning while my family is still sleeping). ❤️

Some of my perfect portal places: That corner nook in my local library growing up, which was romantically quiet yet innocently flirtatious. Any room in the MET that has the fewest people in it where I can just bask. My desk; I feel at home where I'm able to write or type words. A few tiny and secluded gardens in the city where I can sit and soak up the sun.

Separately, I *do* *not* *know* how any work gets done in the New York Review of Books office -- I literally gasped out loud at that delicious chaos.

PS, I love this format!
